Great ideas and spotting deer

Thinking up a great idea is a little like spotting a deer.

They’re elusive enough that discovering one is always big news.

The key to increasing your chances is actually visiting their habitats.

There’s no guarantee that you’ll see a deer on any given hike through the forest, but you certainly won’t find one from your mid-town apartment.

The key factors in this venture are frequency and duration. If the likelihood of spotting a deer stands at 1 in 50 for every hour spent searching, the probability works against you on a short term basis, but aggregates to excellent odds over the course of a few months.

The nice thing about truly great ideas is that a few is actually all we need to start doing work that makes a difference. Of course persistence and a willingness to subject these ideas to stress-tests is also required.

So the question is, in which kind of habitat do the kind of ideas you’re looking for or hoping to generate reside? Once we pinpoint the kind of intellectual company, headspace, or information diet that might enhance our chances, we’re on the right track. At that point the trick becomes finding ways to increase the time we spend exploring those habitats in whatever form they take.
